Defining Simulant Diamonds

What are the different gem shapes?

Asscher – Introduced in 1902 by the Asscher Brothers of what is now the Royal Asscher Diamond Company, the “Asscher cut” did not become popular until the 1920s. Until recently, they were mostly found in vintage jewelry stores, but the shape has now regained popularity in the early 21st Century.

While known as a square shape, the Asscher cut is actually on the verge of octagonal since all four corners are cropped (although the cropped corners are not noticeable once the stone is mounted into a four-prong setting).

Asscher cuts look similar to emerald cuts, the most obvious difference being that they are square instead of rectangular. It features large step facets and a high crown that produces brilliance like no other shape. Diamond experts are known to refer to the shine and sparkle of the Asscher cut as “an endless hallway with reflective mirrors.”

Cushion– Once the standard cut for diamonds, and now regarded as a classic, cushion cuts have a long history and will never go out of style. Cushion cut stones are great for soft halos and vintage settings and have both a classic and timeless appeal. They are cut with the most dispersion, or fire, resulting in soft, rounded edges that no other cut can rival.

If you love colored flashes of light coming from a stone, then you will cherish a cushion cut for, say, an engagement ring. However, with a silhouette that resembles a pillow, the cushion’s unique shape can prove to be complicated for first-time buyers. Judging cut quality in a cushion cut is not an exact science…it is the stone’s look and performance that is most important.

While round stones have the most brilliance (being the return of white light), a cushion cut will have more fire (rainbow colors).

Emerald – While many antique jewelry pieces during the Art Deco period featured step-cut styles, cutting stones into an emerald shape dates back to the 13th century. Jewelry lovers are eager to recapture the aesthetics of those bygone times when diamonds were first making their way into popular culture.

With 58 facets (25 on the crown, 25 on the pavilion, and 8 on the girdle with 3 rows of bottom steps and 3 rows of top steps), the modern emerald cut has rows of facets different from other fancy-cut shapes. The facets are arranged in rectilinear style, parallel to the girdle, in a staircase form, which is why they call it step-cut.

While the corners of stones are often the weakest points, the emerald cut counters this concern with a keel running through the pavilion terminus that is not available in other cuts. If you love the classic style of antique jewelry, an emerald cut may be the choice for you.

Heart – The heart-cut stone has a rich, royal, and romantic history that dates back to the 17th Century. It is a rare shape that requires extreme skill and precision to cut properly. That said, with advancements in cutting technology and the introduction of lasers, perfectly cut heart-shaped stones are more easily achieved without sacrificing their brilliance.

The heart shape is one of the rarest and most popular of all the shapes. Heart-cut diamonds have appeared in a variety of royal and world-famous jewelry. Celebrities like Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, and Gwen Stefani have all elevated the heart-shaped cut in the public eye, increasing its demand.

Made of between 56 and 58 facets, the heart-cut often features “French tips” on the pointed end that help to magnify shine and brilliance. Perfect for engagement and wedding bands, the heart-cut stone shape is truly an outspoken declaration of love.

Oval – Oval-cut stones are a more recent phenomenon, immediately sought after for engagement rings. When aligned with the finger, the oval shape has an elongating effect, which is very flattering. That said, East-West rings, with the oval aligned perpendicular to the finger, is also gaining popularity for its unique style.

Whichever setting you choose; the timeless oval shape lends itself well to vintage style. If you are deciding between oval or round, then an oval-cut stone is well worth contemplating. Since the oval has a larger surface, it will appear bigger than a round.

However, all fancy shaped stones have some light leakage, and in oval cuts, a bowtie shape will form across the middle of the stone. Every oval-cut will show a bowtie, with some being more prominent and some more subtle. For purists, that can be a deal breaker. But ovals can also be one of the most sparkly cuts available, and some embrace the pattern as a distinctive enhancement.

Pear – Also known as the teardrop or pendeloque cut, the pear cut is unlike any other. Considered a modified brilliant cut, one that blends the Marquise and oval cuts with one end rounded and the other a point, its signature silhouette is instantly recognized and coveted. Katherine Heigl, Victoria Beckham and Cardi B have all sported pear-cut diamond engagement rings.

Some pear-shaped stones, like oval-cuts, may have a bowtie effect. This occurs when light doesn’t bounce into the middle of the stone, because of the way it was cut. Most agree this is part of the pear cut’s unique beauty, while others find it less desirable. However, the pear has a similar faceting structure to the round brilliant cuts, which means it retains that desired fire and brilliance that make diamonds sparkle.

The pear shape can be worn with the tip pointing upwards or downwards on the finger, making it a more versatile shape that has a dynamism. It makes a strong statement while still feeling classic.

Round – When you are looking for brilliance, fire, and sparkle, nothing dances with light like a round stone. These remarkable optics are due to the symmetry and proportions that create optimum reflection, refraction, and scintillation. The round shape has the best light reflection of any cut, as the most light returns to the eye.

Diamond faceting started in the 15th Century, when it was discovered that diamonds could be polished by their own dust. Faceting unlocked the potential for sparkle, and once diamond cutters discovered the beauty of polished diamonds, they began innovating with polishing crystals and creating table diamond cuts and step cut stones.

In the 16th Century, faceted diamond cutters developed rose cuts, followed by cushion shapes and old mine cuts, followed by Mazarin cuts to maximize brilliance in the 17th Century, and industrial cutting in the 19th Century. Through it all, the pure circular silhouette of the round cut diamond has inspired ring styles from halo to solitaire, as a round brilliant cut stone in the sunlight will throw reflections and rainbows across the room.

The angles and proportions of round cut diamonds have been researched in depth by grading laboratories, while the cutting standards for the round brilliant are higher in general than for any other cut. Which is why round cut stones are still the most popular shape for engagement rings.

  • Anastasia
  • - Our Anastasia Collection features round cut crystalline designs. Anastasiya Nikolayevna was the grand duchess of Russia and the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, the last emperor of Russia. Whether or not she actually escaped the family tragedy, Anastasia has been the subject of plays, films, Rolling Stones’ lyrics, and many fashion trends. Bright and alluring, yet evocative of a mystery, it stands to reason why AZL associates the brilliance of round cut designs with this historically mystifying figure.

Arabella - Our Arabella collection features Asscher cut crystalline settings. Among the historical significances, Arabella Stuart was the cousin of James I, and a common descendant of Henry VII, putting her next in line to Elizabeth I’s throne after James. Though of Scottish nobility, her birth in England made her preferable to James for some, and a candidate for the throne. Her grandmother, Bess of Hardwick, was one of the richest and most influential women of that Age after Elizabeth herself, which is likely why Arabella became such a fashion constant. Arabella Churchill, daughter of Sir Winston Churchill, is also connected to the royal family by blood, including that of being a cousin to Lady Diana. Multifaceted and intricate, it is easy to see why AZL chose the Asscher cut to represent these historical women.

DianaOur Diana Collection features cushion and princess cut crystalline settings. Does any single name evoke eloquent style and quiet sophistication like Diana? The world watched her grow, bring attention to causes close to her heart, and then depart too soon. Our cushion and princess cut settings, like Diana herself, have a storied history and will never go out of style. Make a statement and leave a lasting impression with these elegant pieces from the collection we could only call…Diana.

Elizabeth - Our Elizabeth collection features pear shape crystalline settings. Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, his second wife. She succeeded her half-sister, Mary, in 1558, and set out to rule by good counsel. Her reign became known as the Elizabethan Era, and was famous for the flourishing English drama and expanding exploration, while she became known as a charismatic performer and dogged survivor in an era when government was ramshackle and limited. Elizabeth II was born into royalty as the daughter of the second son of King George V. After her uncle Edward VIII abdicated in 1936 (subsequently becoming duke of Windsor), her father became King George VI, and she became heir presumptive. Elizabeth assumed the title of queen in 1952, and remains to this day. How perfect then to be represented by our pear shape stones, blending the Marquise and oval cuts to create a signature silhouette that is instantly recognized and admired.

Grace - Our Grace collection features emerald cut crystalline. Grace Patricia Kelly was an American film actress who, after starring in several significant films in the early to mid-1950s, became Princess of Monaco by marrying Prince Rainier III in 1956. Princess Grace became a permanent fixture in our collective pop culture perception from that moment until years after she left the world stage. That is why the classic lines and understated elegance of our emerald cut stones speak Grace to us, and we’re confident you’ll agree.

The fact that she won an Emmy and Golden Globe for the television film Anastasia: The Mystery of Anastasia, the namesake for our best-selling round cut collection, secured Olivia’s place as a member of our sparkly family.

Hoops reflect wholeness, unity, and infinity, and hoops are empowering. If you don’t believe us, check out our line of hoop options, and then “circle back.”

Studs - Much like hoops, stud earrings have a history that goes back before the pyramids. The rich past of stud earrings extends to ancient Asia, where they were primarily worn by men to express their status. They have performed integral parts in art, culture, and fashion throughout history, and now they’re here for you to make your mark. Stud earrings can be worn with any necklace. They may be small, but they often make a big statement.

Drops - According to Wikipedia (because where else do we get our knowledge these days?), a drop earring attaches to the earlobe and features a gemstone or ornament that dangles down from a chain, hoop, or similar object. But we knew that. More interestingly, the drop earring apparently originated in Cyprus, when they were set with beads and gold balls, and were produced using the filigree technique. They surged in popularity during the Victorian era, and are now among the most popular earring styles.

Statement - “Statement” earrings are simply defined as big and bold accessories that literally make a statement. From Anastasia through Victoria, each of our collections have their statement earrings, and they do not disappoint. And while they may announce your presence as you enter a room, they barely whisper to your accounts when you pick them up. Imagine trying to make that kind of statement with heirloom jewelry?

    Rings

As with much of fashion, rings first served a function. The earliest existing rings were found in ancient Egyptian tombs, worn by their owners who used them as signet, or seal rings, as the engraved seal was used to authenticate documents. Our rings provide a different sort of identification. Anna Zuckerman Luxury rings confirm the bearer has a keen sense of fashion, know their personal style and how to own it, and chooses to have no political or ecological impact by purchasing ethically sourced jewelry.

Dainty - Choose an Anna Zuckerman Luxury dainty ring and show everyone how big things really can come in small packages. These rings prove less is more, which is ironic, because they cost far less than traditional jewelry, dainty or no. So less equals both more and less, which will absolutely make sense the first time you slip one of these onto your finger.

Cocktail - The cocktail ring was first popularized in America during prohibition. The speakeasies that opened up in defiance of the restrictive anti-drinking laws at the time made women feel invited like pubs rarely had. The ladies who daringly flaunted the social conventions wore oversized rings on their drink-holding hands, so every time they tipped back a pint or shot, everyone knew her status. Choose a cocktail ring that suits who you are and where you’re at in life, and then sip and sparkle!

Trending - Unique is good, but proving you have a finger on the pulse of trending fashions can feel even better. These rings are the most popular because their shapes and settings are the most sought after. It’s not about conforming. It’s about being ahead of the curve.

    Necklaces

Like rings and earrings, necklaces have been around nearly as long as people. Throughout history, they have been used in religious, magical, and even funerary ceremonies, but mostly they have simply been used as symbols of wealth and status, as they’re commonly made of precious metals and stones. Anna Zuckerman Luxury holds up our line of necklaces to any traditional jewelry in terms of brilliance and wow factor...and especially price. Save money and help the planet, all while looking amazing.

Pendant - The pendant necklace comes from the Stone Age practice of wearing amulets or talismans around the neck, usually made from things like shells, and stones, and teeth. This is where we appreciate progress, as our pendants are made from semi precious or Crystalline stones, set in a variety of stunning styles that are certain to satisfy your inner cave person.

Statement - “Statement” necklaces are simply defined as big and bold accessories that literally make a statement. From Anastasia through Victoria, each of our collections have their statement necklaces, and they do not disappoint. And while they may announce your presence as you enter a room, they barely whisper to your accounts when you pick them up. Imagine trying to make that kind of statement with heirloom jewelry?

Trending Styles - Unique is good, but proving you have a finger on the pulse of trending fashions can feel even better. These necklaces are the most popular because their shapes and settings are the most sought after. It’s not about conforming. It’s about being ahead of the curve.

    Bracelets

Like most jewelry, bracelets have a varied history of symbolism and meanings, depending on the style being given or worn. It is not only a fashion statement, but a link to different customs and personal beliefs. Worn by both women and men as an expression of their personal preference and style, it can be a symbol of friendship, love, connection, good luck, or positive energy. Anna Zuckerman Luxury has a bracelet in her personalized collections to fit your traditions, your personal sense of fashion, and your budget.

Bolo Bracelets - Designed to fit your wrist exactly how you want it to, while looking absolutely fabulous, bolo bracelets are manufactured with a slide that allows for adjustment. The bracelets are held together by said slide, which goes up and down to release or restrict the chain. Bolo bracelets are a classic favorite, and can be enjoyed by people with wrists of all sizes thanks to their adjustable design.

Tennis Bracelets - The year was 1987. Chris Evert was playing in the U.S. Open, when her diamond bracelet broke, and she was forced to ask the officials to stop the game so it could be recovered. The bracelet’s designer, George Bedewi, immediately created a new clasp to ensure that sort of break never happened again, and thus the tennis bracelet was born. To prevent your own Chris Evert moment, be sure to choose a bracelet that is not too loose (so that it snags) or too tight (so it doesn’t pinch or stretch), so be careful when picking sizes.

Trending Bracelets - Unique is good, but proving you have a finger on the pulse of trending fashions can feel even better. These bracelets are the most popular because their shapes and settings are the most sought after. It’s not about conforming. It’s about being ahead of the curve.

    Tiaras

Our Royal collection features signature Tiaras for the most special occasions. The tiara is actually Persian in origin, although it became most popularized during the 18th Century with the introduction of Neoclassicism. Napoleon and Josephine started the trend, while Queen Elizabeth II is said to have the largest collection of tiaras in the world. Today they are worn (mostly by women) for special occasions, such as homecoming or prom or at their quinceañera or wedding. Imagine yourself as the belle of your ball, wearing something from Anna Zuckerman Luxury that *looks* priceless, but did not cost you a fortune and did not help destroy the planet? There aren’t a lot of tiaras in sports, but that’s a home run!
