Asscher – Introduced in 1902 by the Asscher Brothers of what is now the Royal Asscher Diamond Company, the “Asscher cut” did not become popular until the 1920s. Until recently, they were mostly found in vintage jewelry stores, but the shape has now regained popularity in the early 21st Century.

 

While known as a square shape, the Asscher cut is actually on the verge of octagonal since all four corners are cropped (although the cropped corners are not noticeable once the stone is mounted into a four-prong setting).

Asscher cuts look similar to emerald cuts, the most obvious difference being that they are square instead of rectangular. It features large step facets and a high crown that produces brilliance like no other shape. Diamond experts are known to refer to the shine and sparkle of the Asscher cut as “an endless hallway with reflective mirrors.”

 

Cushion– Once the standard cut for diamonds, and now regarded as a classic, cushion cuts have a long history and will never go out of style. Cushion cut stones are great for soft halos and vintage settings and have both a classic and timeless appeal. They are cut with the most dispersion, or fire, resulting in soft, rounded edges that no other cut can rival.

If you love colored flashes of light coming from a stone, then you will cherish a cushion cut for, say, an engagement ring. However, with a silhouette that resembles a pillow, the cushion’s unique shape can prove to be complicated for first-time buyers. Judging cut quality in a cushion cut is not an exact science…it is the stone’s look and performance that is most important.

While round stones have the most brilliance (being the return of white light), a cushion cut will have more fire (rainbow colors).

 

 

Emerald – While many antique jewelry pieces during the Art Deco period featured step-cut styles, cutting stones into an emerald shape dates back to the 13th century. Jewelry lovers are eager to recapture the aesthetics of those bygone times when diamonds were first making their way into popular culture.

With 58 facets (25 on the crown, 25 on the pavilion, and 8 on the girdle with 3 rows of bottom steps and 3 rows of top steps), the modern emerald cut has rows of facets different from other fancy-cut shapes. The facets are arranged in rectilinear style, parallel to the girdle, in a staircase form, which is why they call it step-cut.

While the corners of stones are often the weakest points, the emerald cut counters this concern with a keel running through the pavilion terminus that is not available in other cuts. If you love the classic style of antique jewelry, an emerald cut may be the choice for you.

 

 

Heart – The heart-cut stone has a rich, royal, and romantic history that dates back to the 17th Century. It is a rare shape that requires extreme skill and precision to cut properly. That said, with advancements in cutting technology and the introduction of lasers, perfectly cut heart-shaped stones are more easily achieved without sacrificing their brilliance.

The heart shape is one of the rarest and most popular of all the shapes. Heart-cut diamonds have appeared in a variety of royal and world-famous jewelry. Celebrities like Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, and Gwen Stefani have all elevated the heart-shaped cut in the public eye, increasing its demand.

Made of between 56 and 58 facets, the heart-cut often features “French tips” on the pointed end that help to magnify shine and brilliance. Perfect for engagement and wedding bands, the heart-cut stone shape is truly an outspoken declaration of love.

 

 

Oval – Oval-cut stones are a more recent phenomenon, immediately sought after for engagement rings. When aligned with the finger, the oval shape has an elongating effect, which is very flattering. That said, East-West rings, with the oval aligned perpendicular to the finger, is also gaining popularity for its unique style.

Whichever setting you choose; the timeless oval shape lends itself well to vintage style. If you are deciding between oval or round, then an oval-cut stone is well worth contemplating. Since the oval has a larger surface, it will appear bigger than a round.

However, all fancy shaped stones have some light leakage, and in oval cuts, a bowtie shape will form across the middle of the stone. Every oval-cut will show a bowtie, with some being more prominent and some more subtle. For purists, that can be a deal breaker. But ovals can also be one of the most sparkly cuts available, and some embrace the pattern as a distinctive enhancement.

 

 

Pear – Also known as the teardrop or pendeloque cut, the pear cut is unlike any other. Considered a modified brilliant cut, one that blends the Marquise and oval cuts with one end rounded and the other a point, its signature silhouette is instantly recognized and coveted. Katherine Heigl, Victoria Beckham and Cardi B have all sported pear-cut diamond engagement rings.

Some pear-shaped stones, like oval-cuts, may have a bowtie effect. This occurs when light doesn’t bounce into the middle of the stone, because of the way it was cut. Most agree this is part of the pear cut’s unique beauty, while others find it less desirable. However, the pear has a similar faceting structure to the round brilliant cuts, which means it retains that desired fire and brilliance that make diamonds sparkle.

The pear shape can be worn with the tip pointing upwards or downwards on the finger, making it a more versatile shape that has a dynamism. It makes a strong statement while still feeling classic.

 

 

Round – When you are looking for brilliance, fire, and sparkle, nothing dances with light like a round stone. These remarkable optics are due to the symmetry and proportions that create optimum reflection, refraction, and scintillation. The round shape has the best light reflection of any cut, as the most light returns to the eye.

Diamond faceting started in the 15th Century, when it was discovered that diamonds could be polished by their own dust. Faceting unlocked the potential for sparkle, and once diamond cutters discovered the beauty of polished diamonds, they began innovating with polishing crystals and creating table diamond cuts and step cut stones.

In the 16th Century, faceted diamond cutters developed rose cuts, followed by cushion shapes and old mine cuts, followed by Mazarin cuts to maximize brilliance in the 17th Century, and industrial cutting in the 19th Century. Through it all, the pure circular silhouette of the round cut diamond has inspired ring styles from halo to solitaire, as a round brilliant cut stone in the sunlight will throw reflections and rainbows across the room.

The angles and proportions of round cut diamonds have been researched in depth by grading laboratories, while the cutting standards for the round brilliant are higher in general than for any other cut. Which is why round cut stones are still the most popular shape for engagement rings.
